SBTech

SBTech

SBTech was a business-to-business sports betting technology supplier that licensed a sportsbook platform, odds and trading services, and an account and casino platform to operators, lotteries and land-based betting companies in regulated markets. It ceased to exist as an independent vendor in April 2020, when it was absorbed into the newly formed DraftKings Inc. via a three-way business combination with DraftKings and the SPAC Diamond Eagle Acquisition Corp. Its technology became DraftKings' in-house betting and gaming platform, and sbtech.com now returns an HTTP 301 redirect to draftkings.com.

History

SBTech was founded in 2007 by Israeli entrepreneur Shalom Meckenzie, who served as a director until May 2014. Trading as SBTech (Global) Limited, an Isle of Man registered company with development, trading and commercial offices spread across Bulgaria, Malta, Ukraine, Israel, the UK and the United States, it supplied sportsbook platform technology, managed trading and risk services and a casino package, winning Sportsbook Supplier of the Year at the SBC Awards in 2019 and signing operators including Bet.pt in Portugal (2016) and Czech lottery operator Sazka (2018, extended 2020). On 22-23 December 2019 Diamond Eagle Acquisition Corp., DraftKings Inc. and SBTech (Global) Limited announced a three-way business combination; it closed on 23 April 2020 and the combined company began trading on Nasdaq as DKNG on 24 April 2020 at a valuation of about US$3.3 billion. SBTech shareholders were paid roughly EUR 590 million in cash and new DraftKings Class A stock, and Meckenzie became DraftKings' largest single shareholder with about an 11 percent stake. SBTech became DraftKings' B2B betting and gaming technology division rather than being sold on; DraftKings migrated its own US sportsbook onto an in-house stack in phases from 2022 onward, and has publicly taken a cautious stance on expanding the inherited B2B supply business. In June 2021 short-seller Hindenburg Research published a report alleging SBTech had supplied markets where betting was illegal, which DraftKings disputed.

Notable

  • Founded in 2007 by Shalom Meckenzie, who was a director until May 2014 and became DraftKings' largest shareholder (about 11 percent) after the merger.
  • The DraftKings / SBTech / Diamond Eagle Acquisition Corp. business combination was announced in December 2019 and closed on 23 April 2020, valuing the combined company at about US$3.3 billion; SBTech shareholders received roughly EUR 590 million (EUR 180 million cash plus about EUR 410 million in stock).
  • sbtech.com issues an HTTP 301 permanent redirect to draftkings.com; the SBTech brand is no longer marketed as a standalone supplier.
  • In June 2021 Hindenburg Research published a report alleging SBTech, then about 25 percent of DraftKings' revenue, had ties to illegal gambling markets.

Disputed client claims

  • ScandiBet — ScandiBet was a genuine SBTech sportsbook client but the brand no longer exists: after passing from Bethard Group to Spiffbet (which bought operator Manisol Gaming in 2021), ScandiBet closed on 10 August 2022 and its players were moved to TurboVegas, so it runs no sportsbook today (Swedish trade coverage of the closure, e.g. casinofeber.se).
  • MyStake — MyStake is a Curacao-licensed brand launched in 2019 by Santeda International B.V. and is attributed to Swiss-Georgian supplier Upgaming's software, not SBTech; no source at any point links MyStake to SBTech (https://www.igamingtoday.com/european-software-firm-linked-to-unlicensed-casinos/).

How well established

The technical fingerprint is inferred rather than directly documented. The founding year, the founder and the April 2020 merger are firmly sourced, as is the redirect from sbtech.com to draftkings.com, which was verified directly. No headquarters is recorded because SBTech (Global) Limited's Isle of Man registration and its operating centres in Bulgaria, Malta, Ukraine, Israel and the United Kingdom cannot be reduced to a single verified city. No announcement of a formal wind-down of the inherited B2B business was found, and the MyStake dispute below rests on trade-adjacent rather than primary sources.
