History

NetEnt was founded in 1996 as Net Entertainment, reported to have been established by Bill Lindwall and Rolf Lundstrom as part of the Swedish gaming group Cherry, whose cherrycasino.com was among the earliest internet casinos. It later listed independently on Nasdaq Stockholm and became the default studio on Nordic and UK casino sites.

In September 2019 NetEnt agreed to acquire Red Tiger Gaming for around GBP 220m, adding a second studio. In June 2020 Evolution made an all-share offer valuing NetEnt at about SEK 19.6bn, and took full control by 2 December 2020, bringing Red Tiger with it. NetEnt now operates as a studio brand within Evolution rather than an independent listed company. Its games are still served from the long-established casinomodule.com infrastructure, and netent.com and redtiger.com resolve to the same address — a clean technical marker of the shared Evolution ownership.

Notable

  • Was itself an acquirer before being acquired: it bought Red Tiger Gaming for around GBP 220m in 2019, a year before Evolution bought NetEnt.
  • Evolution's all-share offer valued NetEnt at about SEK 19.6bn; Evolution took full control on 2 December 2020.
  • Originated as a spin-out of the Swedish gambling group Cherry.
  • Its games are still served from casinomodule.com, and netent.com and redtiger.com resolve to the same IP address.

Notable work

  • Starburst
  • Gonzo's Quest
  • Dead or Alive II
  • Divine Fortune
  • Blood Suckers

How well established

The Red Tiger and Evolution transactions and their valuations are documented from company announcements. The 1996 founding and the connection to the Cherry group are reported rather than taken from a register.
