History

The company's roots are in Scientific Games Corporation, which grew by acquisition across four decades: WMS Industries in 2013, Bally Technologies (which had itself absorbed Shuffle Master) in 2014 for USD 5.1bn, and Barcrest and NYX Gaming Group — bringing NextGen Gaming, Side City, Cryptologic and OpenBet — by 2018.

In 2021-2022 the company split itself apart. The lottery business was sold to Brookfield Business Partners for USD 6.05bn, announced in October 2021 and completed on 5 April 2022, and — critically — kept the Scientific Games name. The sports betting business, OpenBet, was sold to Endeavor. The remaining gaming and digital business rebranded as Light & Wonder on 1 March 2022. So 'Scientific Games' today denotes the Brookfield-owned lottery company in Alpharetta, Georgia, not the slot supplier — a distinction most supplier lists get wrong. Light & Wonder bought in the remaining 17% of its social casino subsidiary SciPlay in October 2023 for over USD 420m, added an ASX listing in 2023 and delisted from Nasdaq on 13 November 2025, making ASX:LNW its sole primary listing with US shares trading over the counter as LNWO. Its Dragon Train trade-secret dispute with Aristocrat settled on 12 January 2026: Light & Wonder paid USD 127.5m and permanently withdrew both Dragon Train and Jewel of the Dragon.
