Yggdrasil was founded in 2013 by Fredrik Elmqvist, who had previously worked at NetEnt — the widely repeated claim that he was NetEnt's chief executive could not be substantiated from any non-affiliate source and should not be relied on. The studio launched with the iSENSE HTML5 client and grew on a small number of high-variance titles plus the BOOST promotional tool set.

From around 2018 it became a subsidiary of the listed Swedish operator Cherry AB. A plan to spin Yggdrasil out and list it separately in 2019 was abandoned when a Bridgepoint-led consortium took Cherry private, and Yggdrasil stayed inside the group, which now trades as European Entertainment Group alongside ComeOn Group, Highlight Games and Game Lounge. Reports of a 2023 collapse or change of control do not hold up: what is evidenced is a consolidation of verticals in mid-2023, a change of chief executive to James Curwen from October 2023, headcount reduction and a platform overhaul. From 2020 it pivoted towards publishing — YG Masters and the GATI toolkit let independent studios build on Yggdrasil technology and reach operators through its integration, so a 'Yggdrasil' supplier entry on a casino may cover several third-party studios. Elmqvist stepped down as chief executive in April 2022.
